Erdogan calls on international community to take urgent action to secure immediate ceasefire in Gaza
(MENAFN) Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday called on the international community to take urgent action to secure an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and ensure the swift delivery of humanitarian aid.
Speaking at a trilateral summit in Istanbul with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Libyan Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, Erdogan emphasized that Israel’s military actions have created a deep humanitarian crisis in Gaza. He reaffirmed that the only sustainable path to peace is the creation of a sovereign, independent, and unified Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, based on the 1967 borders.
The summit, according to a statement from Türkiye's Communications Directorate, also addressed regional cooperation and pressing issues facing the Mediterranean, particularly irregular migration. Erdogan underscored the need for long-term, multilateral solutions to tackle the root causes of migration.
The leaders agreed to reconvene after the relevant cooperation committees meet and begin implementing the summit’s resolutions.
Meanwhile, despite international appeals for a ceasefire, Israel has continued its military campaign in Gaza since October 7, 2023. The ongoing offensive has killed over 60,000 Palestinians—mainly women and children—caused widespread destruction, and worsened food shortages in the besieged enclave.
